Someone Edited a Helm Release by Hand

medium 20 XP ~8 minHands-on lab

audit-log in partners is a Helm release (chart webapp 1.3.0). During last night's incident, someone patched it straight in the cluster with kubectl. They scaled it, changed its image and changed its log level. The incident is over, and the team wants the app to match the release again.

Task

  • The Deployment, ConfigMap and Pods of audit-log match what the release defines: 2 replicas, image nginx:1.27.1, log level warn.
  • Do it with Helm, keeping the release and its history (no uninstall). The release's own values stay as they are.

helm get manifest audit-log -n partners shows what the release defines. Compare it with the live objects.

About this machine

Ubuntu 24.04 with a private practice cluster: a real Kubernetes API server, scheduler and controllers, and three nodes (controlplane, node01, node02). Containers are simulated, so images never download and kubectl logs/exec are not available. k is an alias for kubectl, with completion. The grader checks the cluster's final state, not the commands you typed.
