Compress Rotated Logs

easy 10 XP ~4 minHands-on lab

/srv/lab/logs/pulse holds the active log pulse.log and older rotated copies named pulse.log.1, pulse.log.2 and so on. They take most of the disk.

Task

  • Compress every rotated copy with gzip, so pulse.log.N becomes pulse.log.N.gz. No uncompressed rotated copies remain.
  • The compressed files must contain exactly the original data.
  • Do not touch the active pulse.log (the service still writes to it), nor the copies that are already compressed.
