Add a Log Sidecar to a Running App

medium 20 XP ~8 minHands-on lab

The legacy app auth-api in ratings writes its log to /var/log/auth-api/app.log inside its container, so kubectl logs shows nothing useful.

Task

  • Add a sidecar container named log-shipper to the Deployment auth-api, using the image busybox:1.36 and the command /bin/sh -c "tail -n+1 -F /var/log/auth-api/app.log".
  • The app container and the sidecar share a volume named logs, mounted at /var/log/auth-api in both.
  • Don't change the app container's name, image or command.
  • All replicas must be ready. A native sidecar (an init container with restartPolicy: Always) and a regular second container are both accepted.

Start with kubectl get deploy auth-api -n ratings -o yaml.

About this machine

Ubuntu 24.04 with a private practice cluster: a real Kubernetes API server, scheduler and controllers, and three nodes (controlplane, node01, node02). Containers are simulated, so images never download and kubectl logs/exec are not available. k is an alias for kubectl, with completion. The grader checks the cluster's final state, not the commands you typed.
